ACE Learning Center

San Francisco International - A.C.E. Learning Center

San Francisco International High School is the Bay Area’s newest addition to schools dedicated to helping support recently arrived immigrants academically, socially, and emotionally. The A.C.E.-SFIHS partnership is expanding the Continuing Education Programs to include intervention and prevention programs, a college retention program and a flexible schedule continuation pilot program.

Our intervention and prevention program, which we call Acceleration, is managed by Vlada Teper. Vlada teaches Literacy classes for 9th, 10th and 11th graders at SF International who have suffered interruptions to their formal education and are still developing foundational literacy skills in English as well as in their native language. These courses support students to access the rigorous content of our college-prep curriculum by giving them the reading supports they need.

Span, our college retention program, is managed by Kyle Halle-Erby and Amanda Chui. Through Span, we support our recent graduates through their first year in college. Kyle focuses on students entering community college and Amanda focuses on students entering four-year colleges and universities. Span at SFIHS provides advocacy, academic counseling and leadership development for recent high school graduates enrolled full-time in college who face significant barriers to post-secondary achievement. Span is designed to support students through the unique academic, administrative and cultural challenges they face as newcomer immigrants, English learners and first-generation college students on a university campus. Through ongoing peer-to-peer support as well as group and individual advising with program staff, Span promotes college retention, academic success and leadership development. Span fellows, former Span Scholars, take on leadership roles as mentors to younger students. They receive leadership training from Halle-Erby and Chui to support current Span Scholars on their campuses.

This year, we are excited to pilot a flexible-schedule continuation education program. This program will be primarily coordinated by Lindsay Patalano, who brings years of continuing education experience to the SFIHS community. This will be the only program in the school district that utilizes independent study, online learning, case management and small group advising to support English language learners to complete high school even when they are not able to attend school regularly. We are thrilled to offer this program so that students across the city who want to finish high school but who have to work or take care of family members have an opportunity to earn a diploma.
